Blueberry and chocolate muffins..... Can you choose?

You might be wondering why I have created this blog under the domain 'blueberryandchocolatemuffins'...

Well, I love American muffins and I can never decide between blueberry or chocolate muffins. Have you ever tasted them? If not, you must do it. You will go crazy about them!!!

History of muffins
First of all, there is need for clarification as to the difference between English muffins and American muffins. They vary in style as well as flavour and history.

An English muffin is more like a round and flat bread. They are usually served hot in the winter at tea time - split, toasted, buttered and sometimes with jam. By the 19th century, muffin men walked the streets of England at tea time to sell there muffins. They carried trays of muffins on their heads, ringing a handbell to call their customers.

In America, muffins are entirely different from the traditional English muffins. American muffins are individual cakes and can have various ingredients added including fresh fruit, nuts and sweet spices. American muffins were traditionally served warm for breakfast,  however today they are often eaten at teatime (or any time).

Three states in the United States of America have adopted official muffins. Minnesota has adopted the blueberry muffin as the official state muffin. Massachusetts in 1986 adopted the Corn Muffin as the official state muffin. Then in 1987 New York took on the Apple Muffin as its official muffin of choice.

What's your favourite muffin variety?
